The Global Enterprise: Coca-Cola

How do you market a product that is basically water, coloring, sugar, and some other special ingredients? Simple, you do it with a great marketing scheme, and other great tactics. In this video on you tube called, “Hard Times”, Mr. Burns a mean, wealthy, and very rich old man loses all of his assets, including his “Treasures of a Lifetime”, which he sells two for ninety-nine cents. They even airlift his mansion out of there with three helicopters. This all happens with bleak and cloudy skies, and then Mr. Burns begins to walk through the local park. The skies are clear, and there are children playing on the plays cape. He notices regular enemies rather friendly to each other and he has a bewildered look on his face. In the next scene, Apu, the local Quick E Mart owner buys an arm full of Coca-Cola’s and hands one to Mr. Burns. As soon as he takes one sip, he is overwhelmed and puts on a huge smile. All the people that just looted his house pick him up celebrating a good time all together. Everyone comes together and are all merrily playing and at the end of the commercial it says, “Coca-Cola: Open Happiness!”

The message in this video shows how Coca-Cola is a great ice breaker. These enemies that are walking through the park together are not trying to attack each other, but rather they are helping each other and being generically friendly. For example, a criminal is handcuffed to a police officer, but they are not fighting one another, they both have their arms around each other and walking together, enjoying a refreshing Coca-Cola. I believe that this commercial is trying to tell the viewers that are watching that no matter what happens in your life, and no matter what adversity you are facing, if you have a coca cola, you are going to have a great time.

All in all, after watching this commercial, I was definitely craving a refreshing coca cola, maybe even a bag of lays to go with it. I know that I am not the only one that is drawn in by their marketing tactics however, after watching the episode in class about Coca Cola, my friend Brett turns to me and says, “I don’t know about you, but after watching that, I am craving a Coke.”

Most people associate Steve Jobs with just Apple. I know I did until he recently passed and I saw a few videos on his life. Yeah he was known for his work with Apple but there was a lot more behind him than people knew and he did do many other things for technology.

Steve didn’t experience the same childhood that most kids have. His biological parents gave him up for adoption after his birth because they wanted their son to be raised by two people who graduated from college. In a crazy turn of events after the birth, they were able to find a family to raise their son. But when Steve’s biological parents found out that the adoption mother didn’t graduate college, and the father didn’t graduate high school they didn’t want them to raise their son. The adoption parents gave their word that they would make sure that Steve graduated from college, so they signed the final papers. They did everything in their power to make sure that Steve would go to college. Well Steve went to college but he didn’t enjoy it. After finding his passion in a calligraphy class, Steve dropped out because he felt that college was a waste of money for his situation. Doing this enabled Steve to take classes he enjoyed and to become to innovate man he was.

After he dropped out Steve and some friends worked on creating what we know today as Apple. After a few years this idea turned into a billion dollar corporation. But Steve Jobs wasn’t in it for the money, he was in it for the people and their needs. “he found a way to make things that we didn’t know were possible, simple.” The things he created helped retail benefit. An example if an IPod or a IPad. They are products that can be used for almost anything and just come in one small affordable product. After a disagreement Jobs was fired from Apple. This didn’t make his give up on his visions. Steve started two companies; Pixar and Next. Pixar is one of the greatest animation studios known to man. They are known for their work with Disney and all of their movies. Apple ended up buying Steve’s company “Next”, which meant Steve returned to work.

Steve Jobs died while working for Apple and creating many things we take for granted today. From a management perspective I learned that you can always go further with an idea. Steve did this by just creating more complex things overtime. If it weren’t for him we wouldn’t have, Mac computers, Ipads, IPods, IPhones, and anything else Apple made. Also my childhood wouldn’t have been the same without getting to see all of my favorite Pixar movies. Steve taught everyone that they need to follow their dreams even if that means upsetting other people or what they expect from you. He was a great man that should be a role model for all young eager entrepreneurs.

Steve Jobs “Made the Impossible Simple”

Steve Jobs was an important man in today’s technology. First, let’s zoom in on his life and career. Steve Jobs’ biological mother gave him up for adoption and she wanted him to go to a family were the parents were both college graduates. Last minute, the intended parents declined because they really wanted a daughter and a generous husband and wife decided to adopt him. A little while later, his biological mother found out that the mother never graduated from college and the father never graduated from high school. His biological mother would not proceed with the final steps to the adoption. The adopting parents promised her that her son would graduate from college and she took their word. The big surprise, it turns out Steve Jobs never did graduate from college. Mr. Jobs could not find the point of college; he was simply tired of wasting all his parents’ savings on something that did not mean anything to him. He dropped out of his required classes and dropped in to the classes he found interesting, which greatly impacted his success today. Steve Jobs was CEO of Apple and Pixar Animations. He and one partner started Apple in a garage, 10 years later it was a two billion dollar company. When he was 30, he was fired and it was a very public failure on his behalf. Over the next five years, he created Next and Pixar Animations. The ironic thing is, Apple ended up buying Next and Steve Jobs then returned to working for Apple. Mr. Jobs had been diagnosed with Pancreas Cancer, when they found a tumor. The Doctors told him he had three to six months to live and he should start to “prepare to die.” After a couple of tests, he found out he had a very rare, but curable form of Cancer. He had the surgery and was able to continue his life. As you can see, Steve Jobs’ life and career were very much like a roller coaster, he was up and down and up and down, but he never gave up, not once.

There is quite a bit to learn about Steve Jobs’ management lessons. He always followed his instincts and did what he thought was best for him. Mr. Jobs’ created a very large and successful business. Even though the business was such a success, he never stopped working himself, he continued to work and be a part of the company every day. Steve Jobs never just sat back and watched others do his work for him. I think this is why his employees appreciated and respected him so much. He was a great manager because he worked just as hard if not harder than his employees. Retail has greatly benefited from his innovations. I mean everyone knows about Apple, whether it be the iPod, where you can add every song you can think of and listen to hundreds of songs with just one hand. The iPhone, which literally does everything, it is a phone, a computer and an iPod all in one, the iPad and so much more. Steve Jobs had the ability to “see what we needed four or five years ahead of time.” Steve Jobs’ management and innovations will forever impact our society.

Lastly, the lessons we learned from Steve Jobs are unforgettable. There were two large lessons that I learned from Steve Jobs. The first lesson was to “do what you love.” Steve Jobs made it clear that if you do what you love and you don’t give up on it, then you will be happy. Too many people believe that in order to be happy you must be rich, that is completely false. It is not the amount of money you make that will makes you happy, but if you truly love what you do. I have known since I was a little kid that I have wanted to be a teacher. Being a teacher will not earn me as much money as other careers, but I know that is what I want to do and I will love doing it, for the rest of my life. The second big lesson that Steve Jobs has taught me was to “live every day like it is your last.” I believe this is such an important lesson because you are never guaranteed tomorrow and if you live every day to the fullest, then tomorrow is not necessarily needed, but greatly wanted. Mr. Jobs is right, you must live every day like it is you last because then you will never waste your valuable time on something worthless. You will use your time on things and people that mean the world to you. All in all, Steve Jobs has had such a great impact on everyone’s life.

Steve Jobs: Man, Myth, Legend.

Steve Job's was one of the best business men that there ever was. Job's life can be look at as almost as an inspiration story. Once born, Job's parents put him up for adoption, with good cause. Job's parents lived in poverty, and wanted him to receive a college education, even if it means being adopted. Job's went on to college, with his parents paying for his education. As school went on, he did not see a point in it and dropped out. This was in fact Job's first characteristic as being an entrepreneur. Job's says in his Stanford Commencement Speech "so I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out O.K." and says it "was one of the best decisions i ever made". Although he did drop out of college he still attended the classes that he still wanted to, and learn the things he wanted to. Job's was also a very hard worker. Job's would sleep in his friends room due to him losing his housing rights since dropping out, he collected soda bottles everyday, just to pay for meals and walked across town to the Temple for a good meal. A class that had interested him, was the Calligraphy class. All of this helped jobs become very successful employee at Apple. When designing the first Macintosh computer, his skill with Calligraphy helped the computer seem sophisticated, beautiful typography. Although Job's did start Apple, Job's was actually fired. His co-worker that he gave the job to actually had better ideas than him, which caused Job's firing. For a few months, Jobs did not know what to do. Soon Job's missed his job and what he loved, and decided to start over. Since getting fired, Job's started Pixar, one of the best computer animation studios in existestance. Job's then got re-hired to Apple, the computer in which he started and loved. This goes to show how good of an entrepreneur Job's is. Job's was down for the count, getting fired from his own company, not knowing what to do and by that starting Pixar and Next, then getting put back into his old position at Apple. Job's took a risk, that did not insure promising outcomes, and still did it because he believed in it, and thank god he did, because my child hood would be ruined without Toy Story. Job's states after all this the only thing that kept him going, pursuing his dreams was because he loved his job, and people must find something they love and stick with it, that is the key to success. A couple years ago Job's acquired Pancreatic Cancer. Pancreatic Cancer is a very severe form of cancer, that kills most. Knowing this, Job's continued just to do what he loved, down the road figuring out that it was a rare case of the cancer, and could be cured with surgery. I strongly believe that many things can be learned from Steve Job's life. Job's never gave up no matter what was happening, because he loved what he did. I agree with him here. Giving up means to quit, and by giving up you're quiting on yourself, and my personality is not like that. Retail has strongly benefited from Job's innovations. Such technology including iPods, Macbooks, and iPhones has literally changed the world for the better. It allows consumers to use highly sophisticated technology, in a very simple way, and that's how jobs did it. Job's made it possible for the simple man to obtain such great technology, and use it with ease. Steve Job's was one of the best innovators, inventors, and entrepreneurs there ever was.

Steve Jobs will go down as arguably the greatest inventor of my lifetime. He was an innovator, an entrepreneur, and an educator. Unfortunately, I never knew much about Steve Jobs until his death. I really only knew him for his work with Apple. After watching the two videos from class I learned so much about him as a businessman and also as a person. The video that especially stuck out to me the most was the 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University. In this speech he told 3 stories that related to his career and also his personal life. The first story was about Steve's education. After high school he decided to go to a college that was very expensive and after 6 months he dropped out because he felt like he was wasting his parents money because he didn’t know what he wanted to do in life. After he dropped out he was able to sign up for classes that he was specifically interested in instead of taking mandatory classes he wasn’t interested in. Something that stuck out to me in this story was that he took a calligraphy class and says if he never took that class he would have never been able to make Apples typing fonts so amazing. The second story was about when he was fired from Apple and became a public failure. After he was fired from Apple he never gave up and started two companies: Pixar and Next. Pixar was a huge success and Next was bought by Apple, which led Steve Jobs back to working for Apple. In his third story about death, he explains how he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was given 4 months to live. Fortunately, after a successful surgery he was cured. After explaining how scary this was he tells the students to live their lives to the fullest and enjoy everyday like it’s their last, because in reality it could be. I think these 3 stories answer every question asked in the assignment. His most important management lessons are told in the stories: to never give up, to find something you love and pursue it, and also in his final line of the speech “to always stay hungry and foolish” which to me means to always keep striving to be the best but also to never lose who you are. Retail has benefited incredibly from Steve Jobs because Apple has produced some of the most successful technological products in the last few decades, including: the Mac book, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. When Apple comes out with a new product everyone “needs” to have it, it’s become a huge part of American culture now. I think Steve Jobs had an incredible career and I think his successes have showed how he is as a person. He was a dreamer and a philosopher. I learned so much from his speech at Stanford and his career. Some of the main points are: to follow your dreams, never give up, and to always stay true to yourself. This relates to class because it talks about entrepreneurs and inventing which is a big part of chapter 1.

I personally think that Steve Jobs is one of the smartest men that have walked earth. I took everything he has done for granted up until I saw these two videos. I knew of how successful he made Apple but I never truly understood it. The CNBC Video really shows his contribution to the world. Everyone really does take Apple products for granted and they think nothing of having them. Products such as the iPod, iPad, iPhone, etc. make life so much easier. “In Adam Smith’s view, businesspeople don’t necessarily deliberately set out to help others. They work primarily for their own prosperity and growth. Yet as people try to improve their own situation in life, Smith said, their efforts serve as an “invisible hand” that helps the economy grow and prosper through the production of needed goods, services, and ideas”(Nickels pg 33). Steve Jobs started this job to become prosperous and in the end, he helped many. Apple products have so many apps that you can download. There is basically an app to help you with almost every aspect of your life and it is really convenient. He is a brilliant person and his mind helps so many people on a daily basis. His products are so small and are capable of everything. When Jobs’ died, I was so sick of hearing about it because that is all everyone was talking about. It sounds horrible but it is true. I didn’t realize how much impact he has had on everyone’s everyday life.

There are many management lessons to be learned from Steve Jobs’ career. One management lesson that he showed us is that as a manager, you should still stay involved and actually work when you are there. Employees respect bosses who actually carry a workload. I think that is a major reason why this company is so successful. I also think what he said at the Stanford Commencement Address is a very good management lesson. He states that you should always follow your heart. You also need to trust that the dots in your life always connect going backwards so you have to trust that everything happens for a reason. “The only way to do great work is to love what you do”, this is said by Steve jobs in this Commencement Address. This is a great lesson for not only managers, but for everyone. I truly believe this because you will never put full complete effort into everything unless you put your heart into it. He has left us with many great lessons but I believe these are the top lessons.

Retail has benefitted greatly from his innovations because he has made so many great products. If you go into a room of any kind filled with a random group of people and asked them who owns any sort of Apple product, I can guarantee that more than 60% of people would say they do. Apple is one of the most widely know products on the market and the invention of all these products has completely changed retail and has expanded it greatly.

Steve Job's is possibly one of the smartest and riskiest people I know to this day. Now did I think some of his decisions he made, like dropping out of college, was a smart idea, well the answer is no. I do not necessarily agree with things like that because that is a ton of money to just throw away and the thing that gets me the most is that he is just one of those guys that was very smart but could not stick it out and yet he became one of the richest people out there. However, I have to give him credit that without a college degree, he made the best of his opportunities to become his own entrepreneur and produce a very successful company that everyone knows about and could never mistake it for something else. Now some of the lessons to be learned about management are that you have to put so much time into your company to get going, you have to do anything to make money and have to give up so much to do so. Also, how calligraphy plays a huge part on your products like how big to make words or letters and what font they should be to be appealing to the human eye. Also another lesson is to be careful on who you choose to help you out with you company and not someone you are not sure of, then get into an argument with and then get fired from you own production. Just remember that anyone can take anything away from you if you do not know what you are doing. But he did benefit from all this because now he is smarter and wiser to make the right decisions. Decision that end up making Next and Pixar which is now the most successful animation studio in the world. Every decision that he made ended up helping him in the long run, like dropping out of college or getting fired from your own company because it made him what he is today, to do what makes you happy and do not trust anyone. Steve Job’s has so many lessons to learn from to show you the right path and to not make the same wrong decision he had once made. To learn that when it comes to money that no one is you friend and they will look out for themselves before they look out for anyone else. Steve has experienced so much and his advice for us that he had once seen is “ stay hunger, stay foolish.”
