Big Mac: Inside the McDonalds empire
In class we watched CNBC’s Big Mac: Inside the McDonald’s Empire. This short film takes us inside McDonalds to see what happens behind the scenes of the world’s most famous fast food chain. McDonalds is one of the oldest and most popular fast food restaurants in the world. The first McDonalds was built in 1940 in San Bernardino, California. McDonalds has since expanded to all over the world and is still constantly building new locations. Their headquarters are located in Oak Brook, Illinois.
In the film we learn a lot about how McDonalds is so successful and about what problems their restraint faces. McDonald is so successful because their fast. It’s the perfect on the go, cheap meal. McDonalds uses this to their advantage and places their locations strategically on highways, or busy roads. McDonalds is also so successful because of how huge the organization is. There are new franchises opening up constantly and always opportunities for entrepreneurs to open one. McDonalds has expanded to many different countries and has changed their menus to fit those cultures. For example in china they sell salmon and in German they serve beer. McDonalds has been extremely successful in expanding and adapting to global business. McDonalds has also done a great job advertising. Their “mascot” Ronald McDonald is now just as recognizable as Mickey Mouse. They use Ronald McDonald to help get the attention of kids. They also always show kids eating McDonalds or in McDonalds on their commercials. They also give away kids toys with happy meals and have play places at some locations for kids to play in after they eat. All of these have helped McDonalds become extremely successful with younger kids.
The biggest problem with McDonalds Company is the health content of their food. The FDA has worked with McDonalds to make sure people realize how unhealthy their food is by making McDonalds show the nutritional facts on the back of their burger wrappers. McDonalds has tried to expand to more healthy foods by offering yogurt parfaits, salads, and also apple slices. This is definitely McDonalds biggest problem and will always be; this is because they are known for their burgers and large portions.
In conclusion after watching this movie I see how McDonalds has been able to do so well. I think McDonalds will continue to grow and become more and more successful. They do a great job by adapting to the publics wants and needs and because they are constantly coming out with new products and making changes they will continue to be the most popular fast food chain in the world.

I personally believe that you have accurate facts shown in your essay and you went into depth on the topic. I also like how you stated the pros and cons of the McDonald’s empire, the pros being their advertisements, the play pens, and also how fast the food is received. Some of the cons you brought up were the health content of their food and I couldn’t agree with you more on that. It’s causing obesity around the world. Overall, I enjoyed reading your essay and it was well written filled with primary facts
