Steve, I like your presentation on subway. Subway is a big business that all of us know and have probably been to before. I have one right down the street from me at home. I liked your presentation because it showed the side of a big business that we don’t see everyday. I was able to see how someone runs such a large and successful franchise. I like how your boss was able to work his way up in the business and get all the way to the top. That’s a great success story. He seems like a very smart businessman if he manages, owns and does all the financial needs for this subway. I like how you talked about how your boss reuses resources by using rags to whip down windows and tables rather than paper towels, therefore saving trees. This related to the class because being environmentally friendly is a big part of running a successful business now a day. Subway and Neil himself face challenges of weather and employees calling out because they are sick. I like how you showed how he compromises this; he has to work the shift himself, that’s being a very dedicated owner. It’s too bad to hear that one of the challenges of subway is that the company makes too many coupons, which therefore makes Neil loses profit. This is something that he can’t control because the company makes the coupons, not him. He will have to work extra hard to earn back that profit. At the end you told us how Neil plans to stay in business in the future but not in the food industry. Neil plans to run a camera business because he is losing profit in subway with the large amounts of coupons and point cards. He thinks the camera business will be more successful because theirs more opportunity and self proprietorship which he wants, so he can work alone and make his own decisions about business. If he opens up a new business he will be “risking time and money to start business” which is the definition of an entrepreneur in our textbook. I enjoyed your presentation and wish Neil the best of luck.

Neil sounds like a very motivated person with an extremely good work ethic. I found it very interesting that his father was the person who originally hired him at subway. Working 40+ hours at a young age will definitely instill a strong work ethic. He must be a really good boss to work for.

What exactly is "the subway"? Is that having everything freshly made every day? If so I'm sure Neil does it "the subway". The man seems very driven and knows a lot about the industry he is in.

I can see why he would want to get out of the food business because of those coupons. He must lose a lot of profit from those because i know from experience that most of those coupons are buy one get one free. Those would definitely increase business but at the cost of losing profit.
