Zumba is a type of exercise that seems to be sweeping the nation. At almost every gym they have a Zumba program or one that is coming soon. I have a membership to Global Gym in Fitchburg, MA, and they have a Zumba class. They say that it is their most popular class and they even take reservations to get into the class because it will fill up. I have yet to experience a Zumba class because I feel that it would be weird for a teenage to be in a class with a bunch of adults. Althought i have heard that it is a great work out so I plan on taking it eventually. Tell your mom I said good luck and I wish he business future success.

Guy, I really liked your presentation on your mom’s Zumba business. I like how you incorporated how there are many challenges that come along with this type of business due to the fact that it is in the fitness industry and sometimes it is hard to keep people motivated to keep on returning to these classes. However, it is very impressive that your mom has overcome these challenges and is still in business today and doing extremely well. One thing I like about this company is the fact that she tries to make her classes as entertaining as possible like the Thanksgiving Shake-n-Bake class. I think it is an extremely cleaver way to keep her customers keep on coming since they wont just see it as a work out, but an enjoyable time too. It is important to keep your customers wanting more. Also, I find it extremely impressive how many certifications your mom needed to earn before even starting her self owned business. It shows that she is very dedicated and passionate about fitness and helping others stay in shape, as well especially since she is in the business alone. A disadvantage of a sole proprietorship is, “overwhelming time commitment” (116). Due to the fact that the owner has to manage, train people, and have time for them, therefore, it is very impressive this zumba business is still in business especially with the economic recession. Due to the recession more people are trying to work out on their own, but if businesses like this one keep their customers wanting more then there should be more question about the companies growing success. I learned from this business that it is important to follow your dreams and what you are passionate about. I also learned that it might be harder to get started due to the fact you might need over certifications before you actually have the ability to start your own business. However, don’t let those road bumps get in the way of your dreams of starting your own business and helping the population. This Zumba class is serving a health and exercise need to the public, which will always be there unless people stop caring about their health.

After reading Guy Deplacido’s PowerPoint, I learned many interesting facts. One interesting fact that I learned about Zumba Fitness is that the owner, Penny Deplacido, fell into her love of zumba. By doing 17 years of straight aerobics she was fortunate enough to find something she liked. As the 17 years went on, she took different classes so she could become certified trainer. After a few years, she felt comfortable enough to start her own business. This is a big risk of starting a not so popular business. From watching the Power Point, Penny seems to be successful in her business. What amazes me the most about this business is that it is going strong. A Zumba class is not one of the more advertised styles of dance. This is my only second time hearing about this which makes it impressive for Penny to get a group of people to keep her in business. One thing I learned from this power point is the benefits of taking a risk. “Entrepreneur is a person who risks time and money to start and manage a business.” (4). Penny is an entrepreneur who has taken time and money into her business to make it successful. It is not an easy thing to do when she has to do this as a sole proprietorship. She has no co-owners helping her run ideas for the business. This is strictly her and her only. What I find impressive is the advertisement she must have done for this. In this kind of job situation, she has to be a good instructor and a people person. If you do not like your instructor, then you will have no motivation to do anything. I wish Penny Deplacido the best of luck her years as a Zumba teacher.

Guy, I personally enjoyed reading your business owner interview project on your mother. I find it extremely impressive that your mom is still successfully running her Zumba business through this rough economy. I found it very interesting that she came up with the Thanksgiving Shake-n-Bake class. It is a very smart idea to keep her customers to continue coming to her Zumba classes and keep them motivated to stay in shape and stay healthy. Your mom is very dedicated to what she does. All of those certifications she received prior to starting her own business shows hard work and dedication as well as motivation. It shows that she will do whatever it takes to help keep others in shape and also staying passionate about fitness. It must have been quite hard for her to start of her own Zumba business with all of those certifications. That just shows that you need to work hard to be successful in life just like your mom did. Your project also helps me realize that life can go a lot more smoothly and you will enjoy your life a significant amount more if you enjoy what you do for a living rather than doing something your parents wanted you to do. You stated that your mom runs a sole proprietorship. Running a sole proprietorship can consist of “overwhelming time commitment” (116) It appears that your mom is equipped with a talent that overcomes overwhelming time commitment and that is a hard work ethic. Your mom surely is a success and hopefully continues to as long as her creaky bones allow her to. Well done on your interview.
