After viewing Rory Fuller’s slide show I learned a lot about the dancing business. Starting a business is a very hard task to do; you must have a business plan and knowledge in the field that you are participating in. Dance is involved in almost every type of media, whether its music, television, or movies. Getting into the dance business I believe is a very good investment for a business owner because any age group can get involved as well as boys and girls. I was surprised to see that Lisa Fuller started her business so early in life. In the power point Rory discussed that his mother, Lisa has always been a dancer, and at the age of 16 she started to teach her own classes. I also believe running a dance studio will also achieve big profits for the owner and learned this from the power point. I also learned that when starting a business you should have the knowledge of how to run a business before jumping right into it. When Rory asked his mother if she had any prior knowledge of running a business she said none and said it was a big mistake. Some of the problems faced were trying to manage her over 400 dancers and their schedules and receiving their payments. With these challenges come great successes. Lisa’s studio is now a highly recommended dance studio and is also a highly decorated, award winning competition team which competed in Germany and placed 11th 8th and 5th. Although this is a great success, Lisa explains that her greatest success was watching one of her students from the beginning, watching her grow and eventually turn into a professional dancer. As for her goals, Lisa plans on keeping the business running and growing, and her main goal is to see her kids go through college and succeed. I compare Lisa with Nick Graham some what, because they both had an idea when they were young and they both chased it and achieved it. Although young they both knew what they wanted to do with their life and their careers.

I chose this presentation to comment on because I also interviewed a dance studio owner. I think it’s awesome you got to interview your mom about something she’s so passionate about. The way she talks about running the studio, it seems like the positives outweigh the negatives by far. I thought it was interesting that she set up her company as an S-corporation. The book defines an S corporation as “a unique government creation that looks like a corporation but is taxed like sole proprietorships and partnerships. I also thought it was interesting that Lisa said she had no experience in the business before starting. She must be doing something right if she’s still in business after 25 years. Another similarity I noticed is that they both said how they really enjoy getting to watch their dancers grow up from when they are toddlers to graduating high school and college.
