This slide show had caught my eye because I love to take care of my yard at home like, I like to do the hand on work out side and get a tan at the same time. Thing about this type of job will always be around because everyone likes to have a nice lawn but no many people have enough time in the day to do so. However, the bad this there are so many people that start landscaping company’s, so there is so much competition out there that it is hard to get customers when you first start out. Just like it said on the forth slide, he only started out with ten clients but he has been doing landscaping since he was eleven and liked what he did so he did not give up on something he liked to do. But when you want success, you just have to take the hits that come your way and put in more time than anyone else and that is exactly what he did. The future for landscaping is always the same though, it is usually to just buy new equipment and try to get more and more clients. Then once one season ends, they have to get more equipment to get more clients by plowing drive ways and things like that. It is like Nick Granham filling the end, but for landscaping, it is a constant filling the end for every season because people are always going to look for someone to work around the yard because they are to busy in there own lives to have time for it. In my opinion, it is a type of business where you just have to catch people off guard and they need a little help in their life. Now he has forty customers a week. This just goes to show that if you stick at what you like to do as work, and then it is pretty much like your not working. Maybe one day I can start a successful business like this but as a snowboard shop in Vermont.

I like that this business is on landscaping. As a landscaper, there are so many different things to do. It is a very easy business to try and start and doesn’t cost much for an initial startup. He started his business with just his truck and a walk behind mower. You can buy a very cheap lawn mower and start a business at a very young age. This is what one of my better friends did and this is what Doherty did too. My friend is sixteen years old now and he started off with just a push mower, a shovel, and a rake. He has made enough money in the last five years that he bought a nice big Ford F-250, a trailer, and a Bobcat ride-on mower. He is only sixteen and he has all of that. He has done all of this work on his own. He has not grown to the point where he has hired other employees but he has done very well for himself so far. Clearly, this is a very easy business to get started. You do however; need to be a very driven and well-motivated individual to thrive in a business like this. You have to be willing to work long and tiring hours especially in the summer where it is so hot and humid out. Something that I learned from this presentation is that most of the profits from landscaping go towards your utility bills like maintaining all your equipment and others things like gas. Another thing that I found interesting is that on an average week, a good landscaper will have at least 30 one time jobs per week. You have to be, “Highly energetic. It’s your business, and you must be emotionally, mentally, and physically able to work long and hard” (pg 148). This is a huge trait for landscapers. Being energetic is a must in most jobs but it is definitely a must for them. Their work is long, hard, and exhausting and keeping up with it may be difficult at times but you can also be very successful if you know what you are doing and are good at it.

Having previous jobs working for landscaping companies and also working for my parents doing lawn chores around the yard, this slideshow stood out more than all of these. One aspect i found quite interesting was that he started out at age 11 and opened the business at age 16 with just a truck and push lawn mower for just the family members. That must have been a whole new world for him at age 16 trying to run a small business like that, but clearly everything worked out great up to this day because now it seems like this is a greatly run business. Another thing that brought interest to my eye was the amount of work the company does weekly; being just an employee for the company i never really had interest to know how much work they did a week but 30 jobs that seems like a decent amount for family run business instead of commercial company. I have learned that opening a business is not at all easy it seems like every PowerPoint i have reviewed stats that in the beginning many work hours are needed. The key to a business like this is that there is always a demand; "demand refers to the amount of customers that are in need of a landscaping company". (pg.37) In every business there is always a slow time or a period in which revenue is slow, but in a business like this its perfect for being profitable all year long especially living in New England have all four seasons. During the winter you can offer shoveling and plowing services and the rest of year will obviously be yard work and any other form of landscaping service offered. With that being said, as long as you have a passion for owning this type of business and there aren’t already tons of well-established landscaping companies around there are no reason why you shouldn’t open your own business. Overall I like how the company started out and there is so much room to expand it seems with the public already knowing this company so well already.

I personally enjoyed reading your small business owner power point. One aspect I found to be very impressive is that he started working with landscape affiliated jobs such as mowing lawns at the age of 11. That is a very young age to start working. While other kids were selling lemonade for 25 cents a cup, he was earning himself a good amount of money at a young age as well as establishing a strong work ethic at a young age. I can relate to your friend because I also started working at a young age as a paper boy so your power point really caught my attention. Eddie only started his company with 10 employees mostly being family “A partnership is when two or more people legally agree to become co-owners of a business.” (pg.114) Your friend overtime began to expand his company and hiring more employees so that he can become more prosperous and successful in his business. Landscaping from what I have learned in your power point is no walk in the park. The amount of jobs they have weekly is extremely high. You surely need to be equipped with a strong work ethic and willing to break your back to be in the landscaping business. For your friend to make it through this rough economy and remain in business alone is impressive. Landscaping can face some rough patches such as slow time period that you stated in your power point. There are times when people just don’t have the money for the landscaping so they take matters into their own hands and that is a huge challenge for your friend. But with his motivation and dedication he has continued to run a successful business and I hope he continues to do so in the future. Well done power point!
