Steve Jobs

Samantha MacMillan

I am extremely impressed with Steve Jobs’ life and career. He seemed to defy all the odds against him and come out shining every time. Starting from his college career, he decided to drop out and save his parents the huge fortune it was to go to Reed College. This was a very risky thing to do. Going to college nowadays is looked upon as very important in getting a job and sometimes looked upon as the only way to living a successful life. Having the mind and courage of a true entrepreneur, Jobs proved this belief wrong. Like Nicholas Graham, he also started his own business at a young age. Being only twenty years old, he and his fellow partner Moz created Apple in his parents’ garage. They went from just the two of them to having four thousand employees and a two billion dollar company in just ten years. What a drastic turn in events. Who would have thought that a drop out in college could amount to so much?

This was only one of the many challenges that Jobs had overcome and had succeeded at with flying colors. The next bump in the road was being fired from a company that he originally had started. How stupid would you feel to be ousted from the company you created by people that you hired? This drastic turn in events did not stop Jobs though. Although it was devastating to have lost his job and be publicly humiliated, he went on to create the infamous Pixar animation studio and NeXT. Ironically, Apple ended up buying Jobs latest creation of NeXT and he was back into the business. The only reason that Jobs did not quit doing what he did was because of his love for his job. He wisely advises upcoming generations to not settle for a job but to wait until you find something that you love and truly have a passion for. I whole-heartedly agree with this and hope to figure out what I want to do with my life soon.

The best part about Jobs though is that he was a blue-collar type of guy. He actually worked and worked hard, unlike like most bosses or owners do. He was not a limited partner who just invests money into a business and does not have any management responsibility and liability for losses to deal with. He was a worker and an owner at the same time. He put all his energy and time into bettering the company and listening to the demands of the consumers. Jobs is an amazing entrepreneur who never gave up even when he was told that he had pancreatic cancer. He is a brilliant, determined, and successful underdog who will be deeply missed.

I like how you incorporated questions regarding Jobs' possible feelings when he was fired from a company that he started. It must be extremely difficult to rebound from a firing like that, but as you mentioned, Jobs did not see it as a downfall for too long. He saw it as an opportunity to follow his dreams in another way. He continued to take risks and beat adversity throughout his life, which includes producing an Ipad or beating cancer. I also like how you called Jobs and "underdog". I agree that he was an underdog in his own right by not graduating from college but he never let that get in the way of his success

I agree that Steve Jobs was an absolutely amazing person. He dropped out of college very early in his life and decided to make his own company, only to get fired by his own company later on. I think that it shows great dedication to his work that he wanted to improve the company so much and did not just give up on it. I agree that the entire World is going to miss Steve Jobs for what he was about and what he has done for the World with his technology. If he hadn't died from cancer, who knows what else he would have done for technology. I hope that Apple continues to do good work without Steve Jobs.
